Once Bella had gone inside her apartment, Luca took off for their Garden of Eden. The pain was so excruciating, he didnât know how to deal with it. Clouds sat on the mountain while thunder cannonaded from peak to peak. The temperature had plummeted. By the time he got out of the car, he could hardly see where he was going. After putting on his backpack and bedroll, he hiked through the rain the rest of the way, plodding through wet underbrush.
Relieved the garden interior had remained dry, he spread out his bedroll and collapsed inside it. He lay there for hours, bombarded with self-recrimination for his lack of bravery at the campout. Why hadnât he told her he loved her and couldnât live without her? Sheâd just handed him his heartâs desire. But it had sounded so impossible, heâd gone into shocked silence and had only himself to blame for her rejection.
Fool of fools, heâd kept her waiting a week for his answer. And then heâd charged over to her apartment on his time frame, not hers. Was it any wonder she didnât melt in his arms? After what heâd done, how could she believe anything he had to say?
Bella had been dictated to all her life. After getting rid of her title in a courageous move, sheâd planned their campout and proposed to him on the spot. And what had he done? Wounded her to the core.
He groaned as the hours wore on and fear started to creep in. Love could be a fragile thing. Maybe her independent life would change the way she felt about him. She might even want her old royal role back.
Not if he had anything to say about it!
Luca shot straight up. He realized he needed to show her his love all over again before that could happen. Filled with resolve, he got to his feet. Until she accepted his heart and ring, he determined to give her a taste of what it was like to be a normal woman, desired by a normal man.
The rain had stopped by the time he reached town. He stopped at a floral shop and bought a dozen long-stemmed red roses before driving to her apartment at seven. Relieved to see her car still in its stall, he parked and approached her door. He could have used the doorbell, but knocked instead several times.
âWho is it?â she called out.
âLuca.â
After a wait she finally opened the door looking gorgeous in a stunning blue dress. In the background, a man he recognized as Prince Antonio sat on her sofa. Luca could hardly breathe. It felt like a slug in the gut to know she was with him. His eyes met hers as he handed her the box of flowers.
âI brought you a housewarming gift, something I should have done this morning. Iâve thought about everything you said. Since youâre busy Iâll call you tomorrow.â
âIâm sorry, Luca, but I wonât be available.â
Luca could see a nerve throbbing in her throat.
